OHSU/OUS Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) “Tops Out”
01/17/13 Portland, Ore.
JE Dunn Construction has topped out the OHSU/OUS Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) located on Oregon Health & Science University’s Schnitzer Campus at Portland’s South Waterfront. Today, construction workers held a celebration after structure for the twelve-story OHSU Skourtes Tower, the tallest part of the building, was finished. A “topping out” refers to the completion of the building’s framework from floor to roof.
Since the groundbreaking in October 2011, the project is progressing at an extremely rapid pace for a building as large and as technically complex as the Collaborative Life Sciences Building. Furthermore, the construction project has completed over 460 days without a lost time accident. The building will continue its aggressive pace on interior finishes over the next year and will open in stages between Winter of 2013 and Spring of 2014.
The Collaborative Life Sciences Building will place portions of Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University and Portland State University under one roof. SERA and CO Architects designed the building. It will offer approximately 500,000 square feet of teaching, clinic and research space. The Skourtes Tower, on the north side of the building, will house the OHSU School of Dentistry teaching and clinic facilities.
This project is anticipated to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The building will serve over 1,600 students annually. The $295 million CLSB/Skourtes Tower is the largest project currently under construction in the City of Portland.
Today’s celebration honored the craft, subcontractors and project team members for their commitment to collaboration and safety, resulting in a project that is on budget and within schedule. This team is comprised of OHSU/OUS, owners; Day CPM, owner’s representative; SERA/CO, architects; and an entire team of engineers, consultants and subcontractors. Unique to this project is JE Dunn’s Bluebeam/paperless system being employed, ensuring that everyone associated with the project is working from current documents, which has resulted in time and money saving benefits.
