Thomas Cooney, M.D., MACP, professor of medicine, has been nominated governor of the Oregon chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Cooney's term as governor was effective April 20, and runs through April 2017.

Each state and a number of international chapters have elected governors, who serve on the national ACP Board of Governors. The Board of Governors is an advisory board to the Board of Regents, the ACP's policy-making body. As an elected governor, Dr. Cooney – along with his ACP chapter peers – will implement national projects and initiatives at the chapter level and represent member concerns at the national level. The Oregon chapter of ACP has 1,445 members.

The American College of Physicians is a national organization of internists, and with 133,000 members, including internists, internal medicine subspecialists, and medical students, residents, and fellows, ACP is the largest medical-specialty organization and second-largest physician group in the United States.
