The non-degree track of the Human Investigations Program allows trainees to select specific courses in clinical and translational research. This track does not include a mentored experience or degree. This may fulfill a requirement for research training in some fellowships or may serve as elective credits in other graduate science programs. 

Eligibility

• This program is open to individuals with a doctorate. Applicants must have acquired an MD, MD/PhD, DO, DDS, DMD, DC, PharmD, OD, or an ND; have a PhD with clinical responsibilities or interest in patient-oriented research; or be a doctorally-trained nurse.
  
• Graduate students already enrolled in doctoral programs at OHSU (PhD, MD, DMD) may apply with approval from student's program director.
• Applicants also should be faculty or staff at OHSU, Portland VA Medical Center, or from other health care facilities or institutions of higher education in Oregon or the Northwest.

Courses available for non-degree trainees

Trainees may choose to take core or elective courses from the HIP curriculum. See Course Catalog for description of classes, prerequisites and restrictions and check the class schedule for your availability.  After successful application into the program, pre-registration is required and enrollment is based on space available.  Courses can be taken for graduate level credit or for audit.

Applications to the non-degree track should be submitted by July 15th, even if you plan to take only one or two courses later in the year.  Applications submitted after this time, will be considered on a individual basis based on space available.

The HIP core courses are offered in a fixed sequence over two years with opportunities for electives throughout the year. Non-degree students often will choose to enroll in the Year One Sequence but may take courses from either year as long as prerequisites are met.  

Year One Core Course Sequence

Fall Term:

HIP 510 Intro to Clinical Research (online, 1 cr)
HIP 511 Clinical Research Design I (9 wks, 2 cr)
HIP 511A Proposal Development (2 sessions, 1 cr) - Please note, you must commit to enroll all 3 terms and be enrolled in Clinical Research Design I, II and III. This course requires intensive work in order to keep on schedule to write a research proposal.  Non-degree students may take this with program permission if space is available.
