Sandra Rugonyi's research interests include the analysis of biological systems, and the development of mathematical and computational models that describe them. The main current research focus is on the study of the cardiovascular system during development and beyond.

The Rugonyi Lab's computational work on blood flow in the developing heart was also featured by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in the article Fluid Dynamics and Fetal Heart Health in December 2012 and also in SPIE, an international society advancing interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light, where the article was published under Biomedical Optics and Medical Imaging titled Imaging and modeling of blood flow in the developing heart.
