Event Description

Datasets are disappearing. This sounds dramatic, yes, but federally-funded research datasets available online in December are gone today. The systems that house open datasets online are not unified and are often imperfect. This means that if an agency website goes down, the data linked to from that site may be gone forever. And these types of issues are not exclusive to government agency data sets. Data users, developers, scientists and librarians are concerned about the persistence, discoverability and reusability of open datasets.

Melissa Haendel, Ph.D., associate professor of medical informatics and clinical epidemiology, OHSU School of Medicine, OHSU Library, will talk about the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) Data Principles and the need to ensure the framework emphasizes the principles of traceable, licensed, and connected data. These qualities, she will explain and demonstrate through examples from her work and research, are fundamental to "quality open science," as without them computability, legal reuse, and navigating the data landscape are compromised, if not impossible.

The Data Rescue project aims to identify, back up and document critical datasets. Ph.D. student Danielle Robinson, a 2016 Mozilla Fellow for Science who recently defended her Ph.D. in neuroscience, will give a talk on the landscape of the Data Rescue effort, where the movement is now, and what we can do to ensure that the datasets we use are protected moving forward.

Dr. Handel's and Danielle Robinson's talks will be followed by two concurrent hands-on workshops wherein attendees will learn skills for directly contributing the Open Data Day Data Rescue event on Saturday, March 4, and best practices and techniques for managing data more generally.

Metadata Workshop

Attendees will learn how to create a machine readable data.json files for the Data Rescue effort and why these files are critical for data archiving and discovery. You'll also have an opportunity to try some tools for exploring json files in the command line. This workshop is suitable for all knowledge levels.

Web Scraping and Archiving Workshop

Join us in diving into a couple dataset examples from Data.gov that require custom web scraping scripts in order to extract and backup the underlying research data. You will learn different intermediate to advanced scraping techniques, and how to adopt your own dataset for archiving.

Your are also invited to attend Open Data Day PDX 2017 on Saturday, March 4. In addition to general open data projects, Open Data Day Portland is co-organized with Data Rescue Portland and will be focusing on contributing to backup efforts for #DataRefuge as well as Data.gov. Register.

This Data Jamboree is presented by OHSU Computational Biology, the OHSU Library, BioDSP and the CLSU.
