02/10/14  Portland, Ore.

Owen McCarty, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical engineering, has been appointed vice chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering effective Feb. 1.

In addition to helping manage the department, Dr. McCarty will lead development of the department’s educational activities and programs.

“This is particularly important given the changing local and national educational landscape,” said Joe Gray, Ph.D., chair and professor of biomedical engineering. “We now have the opportunity to develop a world-class biomedical engineering/quantitative biosciences educational program, and I look forward to Owen’s leadership in this.”

Dr. McCarty received his Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Johns Hopkins University with dissertation work focused on the role of platelets in cancer metastasis and thrombosis. As a Welcome Trust Postdoctoral Fellow, he continued his research in the area of thrombosis, examining the signaling pathways governing platelet cytoskeletal reorganization, at the Department of Pharmacology, Oxford University, UK.

He joined the OHSU faculty in 2005. Dr. McCarty has additional faculty appointments in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology.
