Research
Faculty and researchers in Biomedical Engineering are involved in a wide range of research projects and topics. Research spans the gamut from basic science bioengineering, to theoretical modeling of systems, to clinical and translational science. The common theme is the focus on medicine and healthcare. Students have the opportunity to work on collaborative projects between research groups if they desire, and many labs have close ties with clinical researchers at OHSU and elsewhere.
Biomedical Optics
Biomedical Optics research is focused on the development of uses for lasers and light in medicine and biology.
Cardiovascular Research
Cardiovascular Engineering research applies engineering principles and technologies to conduct of basic cardiovascular research and to pursue new methodologies and devices for the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and remediation of cardiovascular problems.
Computational Biology
Computational Biology within BME covers the fields of informatics, systems analysis, and modeling. Faculty conduct cutting-edge research on topics ranging from genomics to molecular simulation to organ-scale modeling, and beyond - using expertise in machine learning, statistics, computer science, and physical sciences.
Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology
Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology is a branch of engineering that involves the development and application of materials and devices to study biological processes and to treat disease at the level of single molecules and atoms.
Neuroengineering
Neuroengineering research involves the application of engineering principles and technologies in the conduct of basic neuroscience research and in the pursuit of new methodologies and devices for the diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and remediation of neurological problems.
Spatial Systems Biology
Spatial Systems Biology research is conducted as part of the OHSU Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine (OCSSB), which is dedicated to the use of advanced measurement technologies (omic and multiscale imaging).
