Geriatric Fellowship
Division of GIM Geriatrics Fellowship

Through this city-wide fellowship, geriatric medicine fellows enjoy a well-balanced rotation schedule in:
- Inpatient Hospice/Palliative care – Community Living Center, VA Portland Health Care System
- Acute Inpatient Delirium/Hip Fracture Service – Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center
- Post-acute Rehabilitation – Kaiser Permanente
- Program for All-Inclusive Care of the Elderly (PACE) – Providence ElderPlace
- Neurology – VA Portland Health Care System
- Specialty Clinics – VA Portland Health Care System
- Acute care for the Elderly Consult Service - Oregon Health & Science University
- Elective month - To be determined by the fellow; serves as a platform to pursue personal career interests
The richest learning occurs with longitudinal experiences. We have clinics that the fellows attend year long, including outpatient
geriatric primary care and consult, long-term continuity (nursing home) visits, home-based primary care, falls clinics, dementia clinic, and geriatric psychiatry clinic.
The philosophy of this program is that teaching and critical thinking are essential elements of the Fellowship. The fellows work collaboratively on a quality improvement project that is coordinated with population management of their outpatient primary care clinic. Our program also offers opportunities for the fellow to teach house staff and other healthcare professionals. Internal Medicine residents are assigned to our teaching service throughout the year. Each fellow is assigned a career mentor. This mentorship provides coaching in career development, work-life balance, and critical thinking.

How to Apply

We welcome the interest of Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residents in our program – doctors of osteopathy or medicine. We require that the applicant have graduated from an ACGME accredited residency program. In order to apply, please do so via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We require 3 letters of recommendation, one of which should be from the residency program director. Exceptions will be made for those who have been out of residency for some years. We participate 100% in the National Resident Matching Program. Interviews typically begin in the late summer and continue through late fall.
