A Message from the Division Head
As part of Oregon's only academic medical center and the
only NCI-designated Cancer Center between Seattle and Sacramento, the OHSU Division
of Hematology and Medical Oncology boasts nearly 90 faculty members, including medical
doctors, advanced practice providers and research faculty. The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology is part of the OHSU
Knight Cancer Institute, who is leading
the way in a regional effort to create higher standards for cancer screening,
treatment and prevention, and outreach.
Our scientists' advances in cancer research are changing the treatments and therapies for patients nationwide. Currently there are more than 1,000 research projects under way, including research in cancer biology, hematologic malignancies, solid tumors and cancer prevention and control, all of which are supported by a NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG). We are also leaders in early stage clinical cancer research, with more than 400 Phase 1 clinical trials in progress.
The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship aims to train physician-scientists with backgrounds in internal medicine to become productive independent researchers. Fellow-to-mentor ratio in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology is low, providing a more focused learning environment for each individual. The fellowship offers board certification in hematology, medical oncology or both, and includes direct patient care of hematology and medical oncology patients in the clinic and through three separate consultation services.
In June, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology successfully completed the Knight Challenge, raising $500 million that triggered another $500 million from Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, to go toward cancer research. This $1 billion donation is just the start of exciting growth that will include recruitment of 250-300 scientists and physician investigators all focused on ending cancer as we know it!
