Our faculty, fellows and students are involved in a wide variety of basic science research in labs, and clinical trials funded by the NIH, non-profit foundations, and industry. Our faculty have labs on the Marquam hill campus of OHSU, and at Portland VA Medical Center. We collaborate with other hospitals in the area, and researchers across the country and around the world. We are justifiably proud of our research programs. Areas of active laboratory and/or clinical research include:

  • acute lung injury
  • allergic responses in the airways
  • asthma
  • improving electronic health record use in ICUs
  • cannaboid neural signaling
  • COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • cystic fibrosis
  • destructive lung diseases
  • environmental pollutants' effects on the lungs
  • lung cancer
  • nitric oxide physiology in the lungs and upper airway
  • outcomes in the critically ill
  • sepsis
  • smoking cessation
  • surfactant biophysics
  • tuberculosis immunology and vaccine development
  • viral infections of the lungs

Oregon Tuberculosis Research Lab

OTBRL has brought together investigators in Oregon who share this common purpose. These include Drs. David and Deborah Lewinsohn, Dr. Chris Lancioni, Dr. Georgiana Purdy, Dr. Melanie Harriff, Dr. Kevin Winthrop, Dr. Marielle Gold, and Dr. Luis Burmudez.

In addition, members of the OTBRL, are actively collaborating with groups around the world. These collaborations include: David Sherman (SeattleBiomed); Payam Nahid (UCSF); William Hildebrand (OUHSC); Karen Dobos (CSU), Bill Bishai, (K-RITH), Henry Boom (Case Western Reserve University); Harriet Myanja (Makerere University), Sarah Kiguli (Makerere University), Louis Picker (OHSU) and Avigdor Shafferman (IIBR).

CCAAP

The Critical Care Academic Associates Program (CCAAP) has its home in the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. This unique program exposes volunteers to the world of medical research and clinical trials through patient screening and data collection at the OHSU Hospital Intensive Care Units.
