Biosketch

Dr. Desai is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program.  Previously she was the Section Chief for the OHSU Division of Hospital Medicine (2006-2010) and Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program (2004-2010). 

Dr. Desai currently serves on several committees, including the Faculty Senate, the Evaluation, Assessment and Tracking of Students, the Hospitalist CME course and many others.  Regionally and nationally she is a member of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine Program Planning Committee, Oregon Chapter of the American College of Physicians Governor's Council, chair of the Oregon ACP Program Planning Committee, and the national AAIM-ACP Taskforce.

Recent awards include the OHSU Faculty Teaching Award, the Marion L. Krippaehne Humanism Award, School of Medicine Faculty Hooder and the James M. Ryan, MD Memorial Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching.  Her scholarly/research interests focus on systems changes related to residency education, medical student education, resident wellness, and cognitive bias.

Biosketch

Dr. Cooney is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chairman for Education for the Department of Medicine. He served as the Residency Program Director from 1984 to 2010.

His clinical interests have focused on common medical problems faced by primary care physicians and he has published extensively in these areas, including pressure sores, the swollen leg, medical problems of the male homosexual, HIV infection, and headache.

Dr. Cooney is a past president of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, past Chair of the Federated Council of Internal Medicine (ABIM-ACP, ASIM, ASP, APM, SGIM), and past Chair of the Advisory Committee for APDIM, the National Study of Graduate education in Internal Medicine.

Biosketch

Dr. Erin Bonura received her MD from Georgetown University and completed her residency at New York University. Dr. Bonura was Assistant Chief Resident at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Chief Resident at New York University, before coming to OHSU to complete both her Infectious Diseases Fellowship and an Education Scholar Fellowship through the Samuel L. Wise General Internal Medicine Fellowship. During this same period, Dr. Bonura also completed the Human Investigator's Program, receiving a Master's in Clinical Research. Since then, she has been a faculty member in the OHSU Division of Infectious Diseases. Her scholarly interests are in pedagogical methodology, curriculum development and implementation, and the delivery of Infectious Diseases education to learners at all levels. She has received several grants and published a large qualitative study through the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). Dr. Bonura is a member of the national Education Committee for IDSA, the ID Recruitment Task Force, and the Nominations Committee. Locally, her work has been equally outstanding. She is recognized by colleagues and residents as an innovative educator who introduced Team-Based Learning into the ID curriculum offerings and for her numerous conference presentations. In addition to her education of residents and fellows, Dr. Bonura serves as Director of the Pre-Matriculation Block and as Director of the Foundations of Medicine Microbiology and Immunology Thread for the School of Medicine.

Biosketch

Dr. Joe Chiovaro graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine with honors and AOA. He completed his residency and Chief Residency at UCSF, receiving an Area of Distinction in Medical Education. Dr. Chiovaro joined the Portland VAMC faculty in 2010 and currently serves as the Section Chief of Hospital Medicine. He has been a very active clinician-educator for medical students, residents, and colleagues.  His contributions are so numerous that it is nearly impossible to fully capture all of his work, but he is known by the residents and his colleagues as a highly innovative and creative educator. Thus, it would not come as any surprise to know that Dr. Chiovaro has been recognized by the School of Medicine students, the Chief Residents and Internal Medicine residents through many different awards –for teaching, volunteerism, and humanism, as well as for an impact award. His many publications range from systematic reviews to case reports and humanistic articles.

Biosketch

Dr. Hunter is currently an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at OHSU and is responsible for building, measuring and expanding the residency's scholarly resources, mentoring relationships and productivity.  In this role he is responsible for increasing the Residency Program's contributions to clinical, systems, and research scholarship.  Dr. Hunter is also the program liaison to the University MICU rotation, and responsible for oversight of the overall clinical and curricular experiences offered to the medicine residents.

Biosketch:

Dr. O'Glasser received her AB in Biology at the University of Chicago, where she discovered her passion for the practice of medicine.  She then attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, earning her MD degree in 2007.  She made the transcontinental trek to Portland, OR, for her internal medicine residency at OHSU, and she has excitedly been an enthusiastic citizen of the Pacific Northwest ever since. Upon graduating from residency in 2010, she joined the teaching faculty within OHSU's Division of Hospital Medicine. She has continued to supervise residents and care for patients on the inpatient Medicine Teaching Service, plus she has had an expanding role in the Pre-Operative Medicine Clinic since joining the faculty.  She is now the Assistant Medical Director of the Pre-Op Clinic, plus she recently became an Assistant Program Director for the residency program.  Clinical and research interests include peri-operative medicine and quality improvement, social media for physicians, history of medicine, and case report writing.  When not at OHSU, she enjoys genealogy research, cooking, gardening, knitting, hiking, and spending time with her husband and two children.

 Christopher had a dual upbringing between Syracuse, NY and Birmingham, AL. He was a high school math whiz, and studied Spanish language in college. He focused his energy in medical school and residency on LGBTQ populations and Latino healthcare. He taught throughout his life, from math tutoring to MCAT classes and now bedside clinical teaching for medical students and residents.
