Research
The field of Pathology was founded on research and to this day it continues to play a central role in bringing new research findings into clinical practice. The OHSU Department of Pathology excels in translational research, with faculty members working in a wide variety of disciplines. Examples of the Department's contributions include:
- Neurobiology: Ongoing collaborations are supporting work in the area of brain injury and neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, the Department houses the Oregon Brain Bank.
- Hematologic Malignancies: Several Pathology faculty members are teamed up with researchers from the Knight Cancer Institute in studying the molecular pathobiology of leukemias, myelodysplasias, and myeloproliferative disorders.
- Solid Tumors: The Department contributes to work on novel immunohistochemical and molecular assays that are critical in supporting the Knight Cancer Institute's mission to deliver personalized cancer care.
- Placental and Fetal Growth: Working with researchers in maternal-fetal medicine, the Department is helping to advance our understanding of the critical relationship between placental pathology and its impact on fetal and post-natal development.
- Laboratory Test Development and Quality Control: Pathology faculty are involved in the development and application of new tests across all parts of the OHSU Laboratories and the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories. These include coagulation, flow cytometry, cytopathology, molecular pathology, and clinical chemistry.
- The Department plays important roles in supporting the Knight Cancer Institute Biolibrary, the Layton Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Center, the Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness, and the Brenden-Colson Center for Pancreatic Health.
