Electives
Surgery electives are available to OHSU medical students each year during their undergraduate medical education. Some electives are required for graduation while others are intended to increase exposure to various surgical fields. In addition to these elective courses, a surgery interest group for medical students is offered during years one and two.
First and Second Year Electives
First and second year students are offered introductory courses and research opportunities to begin learning about surgical careers. There are opportunities to scrub in with a precepting physician, attend a suturing workshop, spend time volunteering in the community, and build knowledge by listening to surgical topics presented by fellow students. Third Year Electives
Third year students are occupied mainly by clinical clerkships. The Department of Surgery offers on- and off-campus rotations. Offsite locations include Oregon destinations such as Bend, Eugene, Grants Pass, Salem, and the Portland metro area. There are several on-campus rotation options at OHSU and the adjacent VA Portland Healthcare System. Regardless of location, each site offers one-on-one preceptoring, operative experience, and participation in inpatient and outpatient settings. Learn more
Fourth Year Electives
Fourth year students are devoted to sub-internships, electives, and required rotations. OHSU offers many focused rotations such as abdominal transplant, cardiothoracic, general surgery, pediatrics, plastics, surgical and trauma ICU, vascular and burns.
