Curriculum
The ACGME-accredited six-year Plastic Surgery integrated residency program at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine is an integrated program that spends the PGY 1-3 years with General Surgery. The plastic surgery residents rotate on general surgery rotations including Breast Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Transplant Surgery and Anesthesiology. The PGY1 resident spends a 4-week rotation with the Plastic Surgery service, the PGY2 resident spends a 6-week rotation with the Plastic Surgery Service and the PGY3 resident spends a 12-week rotation with the Plastic Surgery Service. The PGY 4-6 years with the Plastic Surgery service include rotations in Breast, Burns, Dermatology, Hand Surgery, General Reconstructive Surgery, Transgender Surgery, Craniofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and an off-campus cosmetic rotation. The PGY 4-6 years provides three years of training in the basic sciences necessary for the care of congenital and acquired deformities. This service performs approximately 1,600 operations per year with a heavy outpatient clinic load involving more than 200 patient visits per week.
The focus of the plastic surgery service is on reconstructive plastic surgery, although experience in aesthetic surgery is focused on as well. This includes treatment of injuries to the maxillofacial areas, hand and upper extremity, as well as a wide scope of congenital and acquired defects in all areas of the body. More than 100 free tissue transfers are performed annually by the plastic surgery service. Operative management of post-traumatic and rheumatoid disorders is also provided. There is a significant case load in congenital anomalies, including cleft and craniofacial deformities, through OHSU's craniofacial clinic and Child Development and Rehabilitation Center, as well as the Shriners Hospital for Children. The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery works closely with oncology services in the treatment of tumors and the reconstructive procedures necessary for closure of ablative defects in all areas of the body. The service also has comprehensive hand and upper extremity clinics at University Hospital.
Coupled with a one-year ACGME-accredited hand and microsurgery fellowship, this clinic provides an extensive clinical and operative experience for each resident. The chief resident along with the hand fellow also attend the Shriners Hospital Hand Clinic, where there is ample opportunity to learn the management of congenital deformities of the upper extremity.
As noted above, there is a sufficient cosmetic surgery load for the treatment of aesthetic deformities, as well as for reconstruction of the mastectomy patient. The service has interns and medical students assigned to the service year-round and participate actively in teaching the freshman gross anatomy course each fall. Likewise, the plastic surgery division maintains a fully-equipped microsurgery laboratory and laboratory animal models, which are available to faculty members and residents.
All Residents
During all years, the residents coordinate staff rounds, preoperative conferences, journal club and anatomy and pathology teaching sessions, as well as participate in the cleft/cranio clinics at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center. They also participate in emergency departmental coverage for maxillofacial trauma, upper extremity trauma and replantation/microsurgery call with the full-time attending staff. Furthermore, the residents help teach the freshman gross anatomy and junior surgical courses.
Teaching rounds conferences and meetings
These activities are designed for the academic enrichment of the residents, interns, students and faculty of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. They also provide a vital link to patient care. Attendance is mandatory.
On Mondays, the grand rounds include a presentation by a resident, faculty member or visiting professor on a clinical or Basic Sciences topic. Clinical faculty members from the Portland area also attend this session. Residents meet with an OHSU faculty member once per week to prepare for the following Monday's topic.
During the preoperative conference, the residents present all of the scheduled operative cases for the upcoming week along with their plans and surgical options.
On Thursdays, the weekly hand conferences involve presentations by the hand fellow and hand faculty to the faculty and residents of the plastic surgery division, as well as community practitioners. Plastic surgery residents also participate in presentations throughout the year.
Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds Conference
The Division of Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds Conference is held every Monday morning from 7 - 8 a.m. in MRB 310 unless otherwise noted.
Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
OHSU School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
