Graduate and Continuing Medical Education

Graduate Medical Education

Graduate medical education is one of the central missions of Oregon Health & Science University. Graduate training programs are offered in virtually all fields of medicine, as well as oral/maxillofacial surgery.

We are proud of all our programs. Our graduate programs in primary care, family medicine and rural medicine are ranked among the best in the nation. About 52 percent of our residents and fellows remain in Oregon to practice, making OHSU 10th in the nation in terms of retention.

OHSU and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center are the major clinical teaching facilities of OHSU for medical education. The patient care and teaching programs at the University and the Portland VAMC are under the direction and supervision of OHSU faculty. House staff participate in the care of patients in these hospitals and gain additional experience in community hospitals, which have affiliated teaching programs under the direction of the OHSU School of Medicine. For more information about fellowship and residency training programs, visit the GME website.

Continuing Medical Education

Lifelong learning is essential to maintain a qualified, up-to-date physician workforce. The activities offered by the OHSU School of Medicine Division of Continuing Medical Education reach about 36,000 health care professionals each year, from departmental grand rounds to multi-day specialty conferences plus a number of on-line educational experiences. The Division is accredited with commendation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM for physicians; this credit is also accepted by the ANCC (NPs & RNs), the NCCPA (PAs), the American College of Nurse Midwives and the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers.
