Dr. Christopher Swide

Christopher E. Swide, M.D., serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and is the Designated Institutional Official for the OHSU School of Medicine.
Dr. Swide is a native of California. He received his undergraduate degree in Zoology from The University of California, Berkeley in 1982 and his Master's degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in 1983. He began his medical training at The University of Vermont College of Medicine where he earned the Doctor of Medicine degree in 1987.He then completed a Preliminary Medicine program at Mt. Zion Medical Center in San Francisco and his Anesthesiology residency at Oregon Health & Science University in 1991.After completion of his residency, he served in the Medical Corps of United States Army at the rank of Major. After his military service, he completed the ASTRA Fellowship in Regional Anesthesia at Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, WA and joined the OHSU faculty in 1995.
His academic interests are in the area of medical education, educational innovation, and educational outcome measurement. He has been active in medical student and resident education throughout his career. He has served in many educational leadership positions at OHSU within the anesthesiology department as well as the OHSU School of Medicine. These include the OHSU executive committee for Graduate Medical Education, medical student clerkship director, faculty interviewer for the OHSU School of Medicine admissions committee, OHSU scholarship committee, and the OHSU awards committee. His publications include journal articles and book chapters on educational outcomes, educational innovations, regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia and patient safety. Dr. Swide's clinical interests include regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, and anesthesia for ambulatory surgery. He is an active member of the Society for Education in Anesthesia, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, and the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. He has served the Oregon Society of Anesthesiologists as President, Treasurer and delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
On the personal side, Dr. Swide lives in Portland with his wife.They have three children.He enjoys cooking, golf, running, bicycling, hiking, fishing, and reading. He is an avid Portland Trailblazer fan and longtime season ticket holder.
