Foundational: 2013-14 SoM faculty and student awards

They drive the education mission. They instill in the institution a thirst for new knowledge, and the perseverance to maintain excellence in learning and teaching. They put the "U" in OHSU.
Of course, we're talking about students and teachers. During the annual Faculty Teaching Honors & Student Awards Luncheon held Oct. 28, the School of Medicine put the efforts of students and teachers on display. Sixteen distinguished faculty members and five students were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the school's education mission.
"The education mission is the heart and soul of what we do. On behalf of the School of Medicine, congratulations to today's award recipients," said George Mejicano, M.D., senior associate dean for education, during his opening remarks.
2014 Faculty Excellence in Education Awards
Three faculty members received the highest honors; they were nominated by their colleagues in recognition for outstanding contributions to medical and graduate education.

- Atiya Mansoor, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, OHSU School of Medicine
- Bruce Schnapp, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Cell, Developmental and Cancer Biology, OHSU School of Medicine
2014 Excellence in Teaching Awards – Graduate and M.D. Programs
Twelve faculty members were nominated and selected by students in recognition of their outstanding teaching. Allison Fryer, Ph.D., associate dean for graduate studies, noted that this year's nominations process elicited record participation from graduate students, resulting in 20 nominees, which were then winnowed to seven award recipients for teaching in the graduate courses.
"Many of you have won before, which highlights the excellence of our teaching faculty," said Tracy Bumsted, M.D., MPH, associate dean for undergraduate medical education. She presented four awards for teaching in the M.D. program.

- Dennis Koop, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, OHSU School of Medicine
- Michael R. Lasarev, M.S., Instructor, Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine*
- Owen McCarty, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, OHSU School of Medicine
- Joseph Needoba, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Environmental and Biomolecular Systems, OHSU Institute of Environmental Health
- Stefanie Kaech Petrie, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, OHSU School of Medicine
- Larry Trussell, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, OHSU School of Medicine
- Jeffrey Tyner, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Cell, Developmental and Cancer Biology, OHSU School of Medicine
- Buddy Ullman, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, OHSU School of Medicine
Five M.D. students were recognized. Devin Clark, MS3, Andrew Dunatchik, MS3, Whitney Humphrey, MS3 and Andrew Lichtenheld, MS3, were given the school award for academic excellence. The Alpha Kappa Kappa Award, recognizing second-year medical students chosen by their peers for demonstrating the qualities of a true physician, went to Britta Ameel and Andrew Lichtenheld (both now MS3s).
Two outstanding course awards were also given. For the fifth year in a row, the Outstanding MS1 Course Award went to Systems Processes and Homeostasis, directed this year by Dennis Koop, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology. The MS2 course award went to Pathophysiology of Blood, directed by Thomas DeLoughery, M.D., professor of medicine.
