June 16, 2015
OHSU School of Medicine students Karen Bieraugel, MS4, Susan Lou, MS4, and Herman Martin, MS3, represented the state of Oregon this spring at the American College of Physicians National Meeting, April 28-May 2, in Boston, Mass.
The large conference, with over 10,000 in attendance, celebrated ACP’s centennial year, while also providing a forum for residents and medical students to showcase scholarly work.
Member of the ACP Council of Student Members (CSM) and recent graduate, Susan Lou, M.D. (at right), said, "It has been incredibly fun and rewarding to work with ACP faculty and student colleagues to coordinate mentoring events including breakfast with residency program directors, match advising sessions, as well as our annual Stump the Professor cases. I'm going to miss the CSM greatly, but I look forward to residency and continued involvement with the ACP!" Dr. Lou will pursue a residency at the University of Minnesota later this year.
Also at the conference, recent graduate Karen Bieraugel, M.D., presented her winning clinical vignette poster, Cat Got Your Spleen? A Case of Hepatosplenic Bartonella Infection. Dr. Bieraugel won first place in the ACP Oregon Chapter Scientific Meeting in November 2014. Speaking about the conference, she said, “I also had the opportunity to attend the various educational sessions throughout the conference weekend, some of the highlights included the clinical/hospital medicine updates sessions and the Doctor's Dilemma Competition.”
Herman “Marty” Martin, MS3, attended as well and joined his colleagues in presenting his clinical vignette, When Deference to Expertise Causes The Primary Provider Chest Pain.
The students were supported in their research and travel by the faculty mentors and advisors of the Internal Medicine Interest Group, including* Thomas Cooney M.D., Sima Desai, M.D., Renee Dversal, M.D., Joseph Hardman, M.D., Rebecca Harrison, M.D., Alan Hunter, M.D., Lynn Loriaux, M.D., Ph.D., Gorden Noel, M.D., and Avital O'Glasser, M.D.
“Overall, the process of writing an abstract, submitting it, preparing a poster and then orally presenting that poster at a renowned national convention is an amazing learning and professional development opportunity for students” said Dr. O’Glasser.
