School convenes rural advisory group
Group's first charge is to advise on new rural curriculum
March 20, 2014
The School of Medicine is pleased to announce the formation of a new Rural Advisory Group. Coordinated by George Mejicano, M.D., senior associate dean for education, the group provides perspectives and guidance to the School of Medicine on topics that pertain to the interests of rural Oregon communities. The group was developed as an outgrowth of the medical school’s rural listening tour last year.
Most immediately, the group is discussing aspects of the M.D. Curriculum Transformation initiative, with a specific focus on proposals that relate to clinical experiences in rural settings. The school is committed to ensuring that medical students continue with a meaningful rural experience in the new curriculum, to design this experience in ways that reflect the evolution of health care delivery generally, and to ensure educational excellence in these experiences. The rural advisory group’s recommendations and perspectives will be shared with the curriculum committee and others involved in the transformation initiative, and will complement the input the school receives from multiple other sources including Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) and the Oregon Office of Rural Health.
The transformed M.D. curriculum – known as YOUR M.D. to reflect its focus on individualized learning – will be phased in over four years starting in fall 2014. The new clinical experiences (formerly known as clerkships) will begin in the third year of that phase-in (fall 2016).
“We are grateful for the advice on our curriculum transformation. Understanding the needs of our rural communities is essential input into this initiative, and we hope the group will play an ongoing role in helping us better serve rural Oregon across all our mission areas,” said Dr. Mejicano.
The members of the School of Medicine Rural Advisory Group are listed below. Lisa Dodson, M.D., professor of family medicine, also participates in the group discussions.
