Senior Associate Dean for Education George Mejicano, M.D., has appointed Michele Favreau, Ph.D., as associate dean for professional development and lifelong learning in the OHSU School of Medicine. In this new role, effective Nov. 1, Dr. Favreau is responsible for the academic leadership and management of the continuing medical education and faculty development programs in the School of Medicine. 

"Dr. Favreau brings a comprehensive educational portfolio to this important leadership role," said Dr. Mejicano. "Her efforts to organize and expand professional development opportunities, including OHSU's continuing medical education program, will be enhanced by her knowledge of quality improvement processes, and will be a major asset to OHSU and to Oregon's diverse health professional community."

Dr. Favreau joins OHSU from the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Medicine in Yakima, Wash., where she held appointments as associate dean for medical education and associate professor of medical education and pediatrics. She led curriculum transformation efforts there and directed all faculty development and student assessment. Prior to that, she was chief education officer at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where she was the primary educational mentor for all teaching faculty, and worked with basic science and clinical faculty, graduate medical education leaders and trainees to conduct needs assessments, foster facilitation and interactive teaching skills and publish educational research studies. Dr. Favreau also led the formation of a competency-based model of undergraduate medical education at University of Utah.

Some of Dr. Favreau's initial priorities at OHSU will be institutional multi-specialty maintenance of certification portfolio program and other quality improvement efforts. In this associate dean role, Dr. Favreau will also maintain the school's accreditation with commendation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, and work collaboratively with the College of Pharmacy, the School of Nursing, the School of Dentistry and the School of Public Health on interprofessional opportunities in continuing education for the health professions.

Dr. Favreau earned her master of science in adult education from California State University, Fullerton, and her doctorate of philosophy in medical education from University of California, Davis. She then completed a master's degree in academic medicine and leadership from University of Southern California. She is a two-time Harvard-Macy Scholar, where she participated in the programs "A Systems Approach to Assessment in Health Care Science Education" and "Leading Innovations in Health Care and Education."

Her own professional development includes certificates in medical education research from the Association of American Medical Colleges, and coaching in leadership and health care from McClean Hospital/Harvard Medical School Institute of Coaching. Among Dr. Favreau's personal interests is an enthusiasm for language – she speaks and writes in Spanish, French and German.
