Dr. Nathan Selden leads neurosurgery Milestones effort for graduate medical education
April 13, 2018
Neurosurgery
is the first specialty in the nation to produce a second version of residency
training Milestones on behalf of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education. The specialty was also a leader in developing a first version, when
Milestones were originally created five years ago. Nathan Selden, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.P.,
F.A.C.S., the Mario and Edith Campagna Chair and professor of neurological
surgery, OHSU School of Medicine, served as chair of the working group that developed
both versions.
The Milestones constitute the official ACGME curricular goals for all neurosurgery training programs in the United States. They are part of the ACGME's Next Accreditation System, and are competency-based, measurable outcomes for trainees and graduate medical education program leaders to use throughout a trainee's experience. Read more about the new Milestones for neurosurgery on the ACGME website.
Dr. Selden and OHSU neurosurgery have a strong record of accomplishment in providing national leadership for neurosurgical educational development. Dr. Selden serves as the secretary of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, which represents residency directors and academic department chairs in neurosurgery. Under Dr. Selden's leadership as then-residency program director, the Department of Neurological Surgery piloted a skills "bootcamp" in 2009 that then became a part of the SNS national residency curriculum, providing basic clinical, professionalism and communication skills for post-graduate year one residents. This model is still used by the SNS each year to help medical students transition to active medical professionals.
