Each year, Portland Monthly magazine prints a list of “Top Doctors and Nurses” in the Portland area. And each year, OHSU providers – reflecting the depth of specialty services they provide and the institution’s strong reputation – populate the list in nearly every category.

This year is no exception: 104 OHSU physicians and nurse practitioners are in the 2014 list. In addition, 127 physicians and NPs in the 2014 list working in other health systems are OHSU School of Medicine or School of Nursing alumni.

A list of all OHSU clinicians featured in Top Docs & Nurses, including Faculty Practice Plan members and those with appointments in the Portland VA Medical Center, is available here. The magazine’s online list of more than 460 Portland-area providers in 79 specialties – including about 80 complementary medicine providers – is available here.

“While it is exciting to share this type of public recognition, the bigger point I want to make is we are proud of all clinicians at OHSU who every day provide outstanding health care to their patients,” said Mark Richardson, M.D., MBA, dean, OHSU School of Medicine and president, Faculty Practice Plan.

The method underlying the creation of this list changes annually, making a year-by-year comparison difficult.

For example, this year, for the first time, physician assistants were invited to participate in the nomination process, but were not included on the list. Also new this year is a section of complementary medicine providers. This is the second year nurse practitioners were included in the guide.

Previous year’s lists were selected based on the number of nominations a provider received; for the past two years, however, the list has been further “curated” by an anonymous group of volunteer clinicians, as described below.

 

Note on methodology

According to the magazine, local doctors, nurses, and physician assistants made 6,100 nominations through a secure online survey (local acupuncturists, chiropractors, naturopaths, and touch therapists cast 500 votes in a separate survey). After the votes were tallied, Portland Monthly narrowed the list to the top 5 percent of vote recipients in each specialty (nominees needed at least two votes for inclusion). Then, an independent, volunteer, and anonymous panel of doctors and nurse practitioners gathered to vet the list – assessing each finalist by their accomplishments, education, patient satisfaction surveys, and other evidence-based criteria.
