International Applicants

The OHSU School of Nursing welcomes international applicants to most of our programs. OHSU considers applicants as international applicants if they are not a US citizen or permanent resident regardless of whether or not the individuals have previously attended high school or college in the United States. The OHSU SoN is only authorized to provide F1 student visas for our campus-based programs;therefore, international applicants are not eligible for any online, distance or hybrid programs.

In addition to the standard admissions requirements, international applicants are required to submit supplemental information as a part of their application to the School of Nursing.

TOEFL exam

The TOEFL exam scores will be used to evaluate your proficiency in the English language. You may obtain information about taking the TOEFL. The OHSU School of Nursing requires a minimum TOEFL score of 83 *iBT) for admission to our programs. We do not accept IELT score at this time.

Transcript Evaluation Services

All foreign transcripts must be translated by an official transcript evaluation service. Applicants to the OHSU School of Nursing are required to provide a course-by-course evaluation which shows the course name, grade received using a U.S. grading scale, cumulative grade point average (GPA), and degree earned. For applicants who have a non-nursing background, we recommend using the World Education Services (WES) to international evaluate coursework.

For applicants who with international nursing credentials, please be advised that you will need to demonstrate that your prior nursing education is equivalent to that offered in the United States. CGFNS Credential Evaluation Service should be used by applicants with international nursing education.

RN Licensure

Internationally trained RNs looking to apply to a masters or doctoral program will need to meet licensure requirements. Please contact the Oregon State Board of Nursing for information about obtaining an Oregon RN license.
  • Applicants must be eligible for an Oregon registered nurse license upon application.
  • Admitted students must be licensed in the state of Oregon prior to matriculation. Proof of Oregon licensure must be provided prior to the first day of classes.
  • The OHSU School of Nursing advises international applicants to start this process early to ensure you are licensed prior to the start of classes.
