Volunteers who are age 16-17 are eligible for either of the following roles:

Volunteers in the Adult Inpatient Units work to positively impact the patient care experience by visiting and spending quality time with patients, providing exceptional customer service to them and their families, and supporting the nursing and administrative staff by assisting with non-medical tasks while expanding their own knowledge of an inpatient hospital setting.

Volunteers in Ambulatory Care work to positively impact the patient care experience by providing comfort to patients and families, offering access to information, giving directions, and providing non-medical support to staff while expanding their own knowledge of an outpatient setting.

Volunteers in Intensive Care Areas provide non-medical support to the unit, by supporting the nursing staff and spending quality time visiting with patients to promote the delivery of outstanding service to our patients, families and guests. Volunteers will have the unique opportunity to learn about a wide variety of diagnoses which require surgical interventions and recovery for emergency surgical and trauma related conditions in an inpatient care environment which utilizes a multidisciplinary approach.

Volunteers in the Pediatric Inpatient Units assist the Child Life Specialists to positively impact the experience of hospitalization for children/adolescents and their families by providing emotional support and developmentally appropriate play activities. Volunteers provide comfort to patients and families, access to information, give directions, and provide non-medical support to staff while expanding their own knowledge of an inpatient hospital setting.

Volunteers in Rehabilitation Services work to positively impact the patient care experience by assisting speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists and/or physical therapists in providing services to patients with acute and/or chronic disabilities. Volunteers will have the unique opportunity to help the therapists in therapy sessions and will be assigned tasks that help keep the clinic area running efficiently.

Volunteers in these areas support the missions of scientific discovery and education as well as university administration. We applaud our volunteers for living out the core competencies of the organization.

Several programs are housed in this category including the Clinical Research Investigative Studies Program (CRISP) in Emergency Medicine, Pre-Dental, the Trauma Research Academics Program (T-RAP) in the Trauma Surgery Department, and Visiting Practitioners. In addition to these programs, volunteers are encouraged to contact departments directly to partner in the creation and pursuit of additional opportunities.

These roles provides individuals with an opportunity to gain valuable experience and exposure volunteering in Oregon's only comprehensive academic health center, while also having the opportunity to explore their interests within a healthcare environment.

Volunteers make a minimum commitment of two 4-hour shifts per week (same day and time each week) for a minimum of 3 months. If you are interested in volunteering for the Summer Program, please submit your application no later than April 15th.
