At the OHSU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, our team of caring physicians, nurses, psychologists and neuroscientists specialize in the evaluation and treatment of epilepsy. Our center is a national leader in understanding and treating epilepsy, and provides state-of-the-art care to our patients — from diagnosis through treatment and to life beyond that treatment.

Our latest advance in epilepsy treatment is the recent opening of our five-bed epilepsy monitoring unit, or EMU. The EMU greatly expands our ability to care for and help patients who require in-depth testing or longer-term comprehensive monitoring for a better understanding of their conditions.

Our center’s ultimate goal is to provide the best care possible for patients with epilepsy, to decrease or stop their seizures, and help them live their lives to the fullest.

Our Excellence

The OHSU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center is among the nation’s most advanced in providing diagnosis and treatment for people with epilepsy. We are recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers as the only Level 4 epilepsy center in Oregon. The top designation given by the association, Level 4 means we have the highest level of services and skills to treat people with all types of epilepsy, from mild to severe. We use the most advanced testing and monitoring technology, offer the most complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, and offer the most extensive array of surgical and other treatments for epilepsy.

Advanced Care

With our expertise and technology, our center provides the most advanced care possible in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.

Our specialists partner with you to determine the best medication and dosage for your specific type of epilepsy and seizures. If your seizures can’t be controlled through medication, we have the advanced technology and expertise to provide a range of surgical options.

Those options include an innovative implanted neurostimulation system that monitors your brain’s electrical activity and stops seizures before they start, along with epilepsy surgery aided by intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging. The intraoperative MRI significantly improves how surgeons can see the brain during surgery by providing high-resolution brain imaging and the most precise brain mapping available.

Clinical Trials and Research

As the only epilepsy program in Oregon based at a research university, our center leads or participates in a wide range of clinical trials. Patients who participate in research studies have access to the latest treatments that are often unavailable elsewhere. The ultimate goal of the research is to improve the diagnosis and treatment for everyone with epilepsy.
