Surgery for Prostate Cancer

We offer all forms of surgery for prostate cancer, including traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery and cryotherapy.

If you have surgery for prostate cancer, your doctor will remove the entire prostate gland in an operation called radical prostatectomy. This is the preferred treatment for many cases of prostate cancer. In the past, many men had side effects after surgery that included incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Our expert surgeons use up-to-date techniques that reduce the chances of these side effects.  We have extensive experience with radical prostatectomy, and our patients have had excellent results.

Improved technology allows surgeons to do minimally invasive, or laparoscopic, operations. The doctor looks through a small telescope and does surgery through several small incisions. This is an alternative to traditional open surgery to remove the prostate.

Robotic prostatectomy

Robotic surgery to remove the prostate is done with the daVinci Surgical System. Your doctor operates using robotic arms and the daVinci system’s magnified, three-dimensional view.  This is an alternative to traditional open surgery and minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery. Our prostate cancer surgeon, Dr. Christopher Amling has performed over 1100 prostate surgeries using the daVinci robotic system.

The operation has been greatly facilitated with the use of the state-of-the-art robotic system, called the daVinci Surgical System. It provides a magnified, three-dimensional view during the operation and maintains surgeon dexterity through its robotic arms.
