Andreas Lauer, M.D., Honored for Achievements in Resident Education

OHSU Casey Eye Institute physician Andreas (Andy) Lauer, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology, has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education for 2013. The annual honor, given by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO), is in recognition of Dr. Lauer's outstanding achievements in resident education.  

As program director of Casey's Residency Program, Dr. Lauer has fostered the education and training of new physicians seeking to specialize in the medical field of ophthalmology.  "Since Dr. Lauer assumed the directorship 11 years ago, he has proven himself exceptionally committed to resident education," said David Wilson, M.D., Thiele-Petti Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of Casey Eye Institute. "His innovative leadership, based on strong personal initiative, has advanced the quality of resident education locally, nationally and internationally," he said, adding that he also "continues to have an amazing and infectious enthusiasm for resident education."

Under Dr. Lauer's direction, Casey's residency program has grown in size and scope, with such new programs as a wet lab for hands-on surgical training, a mentoring partnership with community ophthalmologists and international medical outreach.

In addition to overseeing the ophthalmology resident education program, Dr. Lauer, a retina specialist, is chief of the Vitreoretinal Division at Casey. He will be presented with the Straatsma Award at the upcoming annual meetings of the AAO and AUPO.
