Elks Preschool Vision Screening Program

Oregon Elks Vision Screening Program

Nearly 15% of children between the ages of 3 and 5 have a vision problem that requires glasses.

It's best to screen children each year while their visual system is developing to avoid amblyopia and developmental delays. In Oregon, the legislature has mandated that all children entering public school for the first time show proof of a vision screening. Currently, this is an unfunded mandate.

Thanks to grants from The Oregon State Elks Association, the Elks Children's Eye Clinic has developed a vision screening program to address this need. We provide free vision screenings to Head Start programs and public libraries across the state. Using photo screening technology--a scientifically proven screening method for preschool children--refraction, pupil sizes, and corneal reflexes are measured instantly. Immediate pass or refer results are provided to the screener. Elks volunteers across the state volunteer their time to assist with screenings.
