What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.  It is estimated that 2.5 million Americans have glaucoma and another 2 million remain undiagnosed.  While vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible, it can often be prevented with early detection and appropriate treatment.

Our glaucoma specialists have trained at world-renowned institutions and possess the expertise to evaluate and treat difficult glaucoma cases.  They provide a full range of care including medical management, laser procedures, filtering surgery and valve implants.  In addition, Dr. Edmunds is a pediatric glaucoma subspecialist with experience in the medical and surgical management of congenital and childhood glaucoma including goniotomy and trabeculotomy.

The Glaucoma Service of the Casey Eye Institute provides a very active clinical and basic research program dedicated to the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Glaucoma research

The Casey Eye Institute has a very active clinical and basic science glaucoma research program dedicated to the understanding, diagnosis and management of this disease.  A major area of study includes the cellular mechanisms of the trabecular meshwork (the outflow pathway of fluid from the eye) and how aberrations can lead to elevated eye pressure.  In addition, a unique model of pressure-induced optic nerve damage is providing us with a better understanding of how glaucoma causes blindness.  This information will help in the development of new methods of evaluation and treatment.
