Program Information
The division of Pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Casey Eye Institute provide clinical and surgical eye care to patients from within Portland, from nearby southwest Washington, and statewide from all parts of Oregon. As a division, there are approximately 20,000 patient visits each year and over 1000 surgeries performed.
In addition to amblyopia and pediatric strabismus, fellows will become proficient in complex pediatric strabismus, pediatric cataracts and glaucoma, adult strabismus, ocular manifestation of systemic disease, craniofacial syndromes, and retinopathy of prematurity. Fellows work closely with the faculty in clinic and in the operating room, but also have a weekly fellow clinic and spend an afternoon supervising the resident on the pediatric rotation.
Friday noon conferences are held weekly covering a wide range of basic and complex topics in a mixture of lectures, journal article reviews and clinical case discussions. Faculty and orthoptists participate in this conference with the fellow and rotating ophthalmology resident.
Faculty members participate in ongoing research including PEDIG, IATS, and ROP studies. Fellows are encouraged to participate in a research project and present their work at national meetings such as ARVO or AAPOS.
