Papé Family Pediatric Research Institute

Pape Family Pediatric Research Institute

Shirley Papé

The Department of Pediatrics was honored to receive a generous gift from Shirley Papé in 2006 to establish the first Pediatric Research Institute at OHSU. In June of 2008, Dr. Markus Grompe was appointed the Ray Hickey Chair of Pediatric Research and Director of the Papé Family Pediatric Research Institute. The institute is dedicated to building a state-of-the-art research facility with a focus on studying numerous childhood diseases, such as diabetes, neurological disorders, hemophilia, pediatric cancer and metabolic disorders.

The institute is planning on recruiting several premier scientists to fill its facilities on the seventh floor of the state-of-the-art Biomedical Research Building. Both junior- and senior-level researchers will be sought. The overall focus of our research program is on the development of novel therapies for disorders with currently inadequate treatments. In order to complement the cell transplantation expertise of the adjacent Oregon Stem Cell Center, we will focus our efforts on building the promising area of gene therapy. In addition, we have a particular interest in disorders of the blood, including leukemia. Over time, we plan to build a powerful synergistic environment capable of developing new stem cell transplantation and new gene transfer platforms for the treatment of childhood diseases.
