Dr. Albert's special areas of interest are in orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery and cleft surgery. He received his medical degree in 1977 from Harvard Medical School in Boston, and received his medical degree in dentistry from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1971. He completed his residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He received special certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1979. Dr. Albert is an OHSU Professor Emeritus of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, having taught in that department from 1977 until he joined the OHSU Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2002.

Dr. Andersen received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri in 1988. He did his residency at Oregon Health Sciences University from 1988-93 and then completed a fellowship in head and neck surgery/oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City from 1993-95, during which time he received a $10,000 award from the American Cancer Society Clinical Fellowship and a Basic Science Award from the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital Resident Research Day. In 1995 he became Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at OHSU. He is currently a Professor.

Dr. Andersen is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Medical Association, the American Rhinologic Society, the Oregon Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American College of Surgeons, and the Society of Head and Neck Surgeons.

Currently, Dr. Andersen is involved in research on the Differential Expression of Genes in Head and Neck Squamous Carcinoma with a grant from the American Cancer Society, Oregon Division, as well as his surgical and clinical practice at Oregon Health & Science University.

Romilla Bijlani, PA-C joined the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Cancer division in January 2015. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Oregon Society of Physician Assistants, and Society of Physician Assistants in ORL-HNS.  

She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Willamette University, Oregon and went on to complete a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies at Pacific University in 2013.   

She serves as an instructor and mentor for physician assistant students and is actively involved in the Physician Assistant Programs in Oregon. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, running, and traveling.

Dr. Daniel Clayburgh grew up in North Dakota and attended a Williams College in Massachusetts, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. He then attended University of Chicago, where he received his medical degree and also completed a Ph.D. in the Department of Pathology.  Following medical school he completed his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University, followed by a fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Clayburgh works at both OHSU and the Portland VA Medical Center and specializes in the treatment of head and neck cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, skin cancer, thyroid and parathyroid disease, and salivary gland malignancy.  He has advanced training in minimally invasive approaches to the head and neck, including transoral robotic surgery.  His research interests include cancer stem cells, the development of new therapies and surgical technology for head and neck cancer, and improvements in perioperative management of head and neck cancer patients.

James (Jamie) I. Cohen, MD, PhD is a Professor in the OHSU Otolaryngology Department. and is the Chief of the Otolaryngology Service at the Portland VAMC. He works in the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center as the Chief of the Head and Neck Surgery Otolaryngology team.  At the PVAMC, Dr Cohen works with OHSU residents and medical students from Otolaryngology and other OHSU departments (i.e. Internal Medicine) in this very diverse clinic.

Dr Cohen earned his medical degree at the University of Manitoba  in 1978. In 1984, he completed his  Ph.D. in Otolaryngology and Residency in Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Minnesota. . Following residency, Dr Cohen completed fellowship training in  Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at the MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute Houston Texas Dr Cohen is Board Certified by the American Board of  Otolaryngology.

Dr. Li joined our department September 1, 2015 as an Assistant Professor.  Dr. Li received his BS in Neuroscience in 2004 from Brown University, then went on to get his Medical Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008.  He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by a fellowship at Stanford University in Stanford, California.

Dr. Shindo received her M.D. from The University of Southern California in 1984.  She completed her residency training in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Southern California Los Angeles County Medical Center, and earned her Board Certification in 1989.  Subsequently, she pursued fellowship training in Head and Neck Oncology at Northwestern University Hospital as well as a fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at Ohio State University.  In 1991 she joined the faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Southern California, where she gained national recognition for her work in micro-vascular head and neck reconstruction.  Dr. Shindo joined our department in 2008 as Professor and as the Director of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Program, providing a full range of consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic service dedicated to patients with thyroid and parathyroid disorders.

Dr. Shindo has special expertise in the multidisciplinary management of complex thyroid and parathyroid disease.  She has performed pioneering work applying novel strategies, including minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, performed under local anesthesia and minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy, an adaptation of the established laparoscopic procedure which provides patients the benefits of a much smaller incision, thus better cosmetic results.  Dr. Shindo’s microsurgical techniques, for which she completed advanced training, coupled with her precise operative skills offers the most sophisticated care available to our patients.

Dr. Shindo lectures nationally on topics related to her specialty. She has lectured in seminars and taught instructional courses through the Pan Pacific Surgical Association, AAOHNS, the University of Pittsburgh and the Research Study Club of Los Angeles. Dr. Shindo has also given Grand Rounds and Visiting Professor Lectures at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Albany Medical School, University of Cincinnati, Beth Israel, and Mt. Sinai Medical Center. She is a fellow of The American College of Surgeons and The American Academy of Otolaryngology, a senior examiner for The American Board of Otolaryngology, and a member of The American Thyroid Association. 

"I believe that the next frontier in head and neck cancer will be made in the rehabilitative field. Patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer suffer problems in speech and eating. Microvascular reconstruction allows us to replace the tissue removed during the surgical procedure with similar composite tissue during the reconstructive aspect. Utilizing various insetting patterns, as well as reanastomosing the neural input/output, we hope to enable our head and neck oncology patients to achieve better rehabilitation than what was possible in the past. In conjunction with our speech language therapists, we continue to monitor our patients' progress and modify our reconstructive strategies to maximize our patients' outcomes."

Biography

Dr. Wax`s clinical interest is the reconstruction and rehabilitation of head and neck patients undergoing surgical procedures for head and neck cancers. He also specializes in treating snoring and sleep apnea. Dr. Wax is the Director of the Residency Program for Otolaryngology and is the Director of the Microvascular Fellowship program at Oregon Health & Science University.

Dr. Kim grew up in southern California. He received his B.S and M.S at University of California, San Diego and then went on to earn his M.D from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Kim completed his residency in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine. In his free time, he enjoys traveling and playing piano/chamber music.

Dr. Thomas grew up on the coastal islands surrounding Charleston SC. He received his B.S. in Biochemistry of Furman University in 2009 (Go Paladins) and then he earned his M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Thomas matched his otolaryngology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where, for the past 5 years, he and his wife have found the Northeast to be surprisingly enjoyable. In his free time, Dr. Thomas enjoys running, golfing and spending time with friends and family.
