Grand Rounds

The NW Clinic for Voice & Swallowing offers a quarterly series of professional development lectures for Otolaryngologists and Speech-Language Pathologists. There is no registration fee to attend. Please feel free to attend one or all of the lectures in the series. Pre-registration is required. Please RSVP using the online link below:

Dysphagia Devices: A Review

Course Description: This presentation will review the evidence for a range of dysphagia treatment devices and discuss their role in the management of patients with dysphagia. It will include the physiologic rationale behind each type of interventions and review the outcomes for a range of devices, including surface EMG, electrical stimulation, resistance devices such as the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), and expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) devices. The focus will be on the purpose, usefulness and feasibility of each device within the context of clinical practice across settings and for different patient populations.

The Pacific NW Laryngectomy Conference-2019

Overview: This is a one-day conference for speech-language pathologists, physicians, health professionals, graduate students, laryngectomees, & their families on rehabilitation after laryngectomy. More details will be coming soon here or email for more information.

Conference Faculty: The course is taught by clinicians with specialty expertise in rehabilitation after total laryngectomy from across the Pacific NW.

The OHSU Introductory FEES Course-2020

Overview: The OHSU FEES course is a two day foundation course designed to provide SLPs, ENTs and other licensed medical professionals with the necessary skills to begin implementation of the FEES procedure in their institution. Combining lectures with hands-on training, the workshop is taught in a small-group seminar format. Class size is limited in order to maximize learner outcomes and to ensure adequate hands-on endoscopy training. Training occurs using the equipment in the NW Clinic for Voice & Swallowing at OHSU. Handouts covering the course content are provided for all attendees. The FEES Course is not open to graduate students and assumes . Those with previous dysphagia experience in a medical setting will likely benefit most from the training. The course is offered annually.

Conference Faculty: The workshop is taught by Andrew Palmer, PhD, CCC-SLP, a speech pathologist and Assistant Professor in the Otolaryngology Department at Oregon Health and Science University in conjunction with other Speech Pathology faculty from the NW Clinic for Voice & Swallowing. He has taught hands-on FEES courses nationally at various facilities around the U.S. which have developed FEES programs and originally trained with Susan Langmore.

Clinical Fellowship (CF) in Speech Language Pathology 2019-20

Full-time clinical fellowships (2) are being offered at the NW Center for Voice and Swallowing, Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. The primary purpose of the program is to train professionals in the areas of voice and swallowing disorders. Training in direct patient care to patients (adult and pediatric) with voice disorders; alaryngeal voice restoration, speech and swallowing disorders after head and neck cancer and adult dysphagia.

Training program description for Speech-Language Pathology 

The training program is primarily clinical in nature. The NWCVS at OHSU has a faculty of 12 speech-language pathologists. Training experiences include interdisciplinary team assessments of adults and children with voice disorders and vocal cord dysfunction, adult dysphagia, alaryngeal rehabilitation as well as, speech and swallowing disorders in the head and neck cancer patient. Independent study and collaborative research is part of the training program. Didactic offerings, both at the NW Center for Voice and Swallowing, Otolaryngology and throughout the greater Oregon Health & Science University augment the Fellowship experience. 

Qualifications 

Applicants should have the minimum of a master's degree in speech-language pathology and meet all the requirements for certification except the Clinical Fellowship.  Applicants must meet all the requirements for the Oregon Board of Examiners Conditional License in Speech-Language Pathology.   

Applicants should submit 1) a letter of intent including background and areas of interest, 2) a resume/CV, 3) three letters of reference qualified to comment on the status of the applicant and 4) a sample of writing (term/research paper, article, thesis, etc.).

Terms 

The stipend for 2019-2020 is TBD in addition to health benefits. This is a 12 month appointment.  The beginning date for the fellowship is August 26, 2019 and it ends August 21, 2020.
