We are the first hospital in Oregon to offer the latest hip resurfacing surgery. Our experts are dedicated to bringing you new hip treatments and care that you can trust.
Hip treatments
OHSU’s team of doctors and surgeons are specialty trained to treat hip pain caused by problems such as fractures, injuries, arthritis and more. They will work with you to determine the best treatment and rehabilitation plan so you can get back to your daily activities. Our hip treatments include:
Total hip replacement surgery, also called total hip arthroplasty, is surgery to replace a damaged hip with a prosthesis (artificial joint). You may need total hip replacement surgery if you break a hip or have severe arthritis.
The goal of total hip arthroplasty is to replace the parts of the hip joint that have been damaged and to relieve hip pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments.

Hip resurfacing surgery is designed for active adults younger than 60 who need a hip replacement. In this surgery, your doctor will remove a few centimeters of bone from the thigh bone and shape it to fit around the hip resurfacing implant.
OHSU was the first hospital in Oregon to do this procedure, and is still one of the only hospitals offering it.

In arthroscopy, your doctor looks inside a joint with a tiny camera. Small instruments are used to repair joint problems. The camera gives your surgeon a clear view inside the hip without making a large incision. With the newest high-resolution cameras, this procedure has become even more effective for diagnosing joint problems. Doctors can even perform complex surgery through the scope.
You may be a candidate for hip arthroscopy if you are active but have painful hips, and if your doctor believes there is a chance to preserve the cartilage in your hip. If you have hip arthroscopy, you might not need hip replacement surgery, or might not have it as soon.

In addition to adult surgical hip treatments, we provide hip preservation surgeries to correct hip dysplasia in adolescent and young adults. These hip disorders commonly result from a "shallow" hip socket. By treating hip dysplasia, femoral acetabular impingement and other hip disorders early and preserving the hip, patients can avoid cartilage breakdown and long-term hip issues. For these patients, hip preservation procedures like Bernese periacetabular osteotomy and hip arthroscopy may be beneficial.

Meet our team
Dr. Herzka earned her M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Johns Hopkins. She completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and specializes in athletic injuries and arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Huff received his M.D. from the University of Iowa, and completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University. He has advanced specialty training in hip and other joint reconstruction.
Ryland Kagan, M.D.
Dr. Kagan received his M.D. from Albany Medical College. He completed his residency at OHSU and a fellowship in Joint Reconstruction and Hip Preservation at the University of Utah. Dr. Kagan specializes in hip and knee replacement, adult reconstruction, and hip preservation.
Dr. Schabel received her M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin and did both her residency and fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at the University of Utah. Dr. Schabel specializes in hip and knee replacement, adult reconstruction surgery and revision joint replacements.
