Do You Need Emergency Contraception
You may be eligible to participate in a research study and receive emergency contraception at no cost
- Are 18-40 years old
- Have had unprotected sex within the last 72 hours and are seeking emergency contraception
- Weigh more than 176 lbs.
- Are not currently using hormonal birth control
- Have regular menstrual cycles

What does participation include?
At the clinic visit, participants will be screened for eligibility. If eligible, participants will have blood drawn and receive a dose of emergency contraception [Ella (30 mg UPA), Plan B (1.5 mg LNG), or 2x Plan B (3.0 LNG)]. Participants will have 2-3 follow up phone calls at 5, 12 and 19 days after expected date of next menstrual period and they will be asked the results of at home pregnancy tests and whether they've had a period since taking emergency contraception. If participants have not had a period by 19 days after taking study drug, they will return to the clinic for pregnancy evaluation.
Compensation
Qualified participants will also be compensated for time and travel.
Why is this study being done?
Women weighing over 176lbs. are more likely than women of lower weight to experience a failure of the emergency contraceptive containing levonorgestrel (LNG). Previous studies have suggested that doubling the dose of LNG emergency contraception could improve its effectiveness for women of higher weight. We are doing this study to see which dose and type of EC works best at preventing pregnancy in women weighting more than 176lbs.
