FEI Titan Krios™ Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscope

FEI Living Lab Titan Krios™ TEM

Description of the Titan Krios™

The FEI Titan Krios™ cryo-Transmission Electron Microscope is a state-of-the-art, dedicated imaging robot, optimized for both high-resolution 3D imaging of proteins and macromolecular assemblies, and high-resolution, dual-axis, cellular tomography. Its revolutionary cryo-based technology and stability permits a full range of semi-automated applications, including: 2D electron crystallography, single particle analysis, cryo-electron microscopy, and dual-axis cellular tomography of frozen hydrated samples. Cryo-techniques preserve sample integrity by maintaining the sample in its natural condition and state.

Fast Facts

  • One of 50 or fewer high-resolution, cryo-electron microscopes in the world.
  • Requires a specialized environment: low vibration and heat differential tolerance, an absence of electromagnetic currents.
  • Achieves atomic resolution data.
  • Good for achieving high-resolution, high-quality optics for cryo samples, as opposed to fixed samples.
  • Has low-dose capabilities, achieves balance between showing good information and destroying the sample.

Features of the Krios

  • Cryo autoloader for robotic sample handling and simultaneous loading of up to 12 samples
  • Parallel illumination
  • Dual axis stage (+/- 70 degrees) enabling dual axis tomography
  • Single particle acquisition

FEI Tecnai™ with iCorr™ (Integrated Light and Transmission Electron Microscope)

Description of the FEI Tecnai™ with iCORR™

FEI's Tecnai with iCorr at OHSU

The most critical "tie point" between imaging modalities is between fluorescence (FM) and electron microscopy (EM), with EM providing Angstrom to nanometer resolution information about molecular ultrastructure and FM providing nanometer to micrometer resolution information about functional molecular complexes.  Scientists from FEI and the Biomolecular Imaging program at Utrecht University have developed novel sample fixation and staining procedures for the Tecnai™ with iCorr™ that preserve both ultrastructural and molecular features for FM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and reduce sample preparation times.
