Michael D. Roberts, Ph.D., Technical Specialist

Michael came to Technology Transfer through an internship opportunity and eventually accepted a position as an Agreements Officer in the Industry & Academic Collaborations group in the summer of 2013. Currently, Michael serves as the Technical Specialist for TTBD. He enjoys working at the intersection of science, business, and law and is continually impressed by the breadth and depth of expertise within the OHSU research community. He especially appreciates the important role that Technology Transfer plays in moving basic and applied research from the university laboratory to the commercial arena where its benefit can be more fully realized by the public.
Michael has spent much of his career in academic research, specifically in the area of tissue biomechanics where he has studied the role of mechanical stresses on bone formation and the biomechanical basis for the development and progression of glaucoma. In the course of his research, he has utilized tools from computational mechanics (particularly finite element methods), microscopy and image processing, material testing and characterization, and 3D reconstruction. Before moving into Tech Transfer, Michael worked as an Associate Scientist in a local consulting firm where he was involved in more traditional engineering endeavors including mechanical testing, metallography, and root cause failure analysis.
Michael completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Science & Mechanics from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville before embarking on a six-month trek along the Appalachian Trail to decide what to do next. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA.
