Operating within a Level I trauma center, the OHSU Trauma Research Associates Program (T-RAP) actively engages in clinical research in order to bring groundbreaking innovation to the treatment of our patients.  Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care Units (ICUs) house patients with serious and potentially life-threatening medical conditions.  Because of the severity of their underlying diseases or illnesses, these patients are at high risk for developing problems such as pneumonia, blood clots, and other infections.

Our volunteer-based program is currently performing research on how to reduce the prevalence of these complications. In response to patient risks and growing costs, the Trauma Research Institute of Oregon has created a prospective registry of complications in critically-ill patients admitted to our Trauma Service.

T-RAP researchers collect data on patients admitted to the Trauma ICU at OHSU, by extracting information from Epic Electronic Medical Records and entering it into the registry.  The information we collect will allow us to determine patterns in clinical outcomes and analyze factors which may place patients at higher risk for complications such as pneumonia, blood clots, and other infections.  T-RAP volunteers will also have the opportunity to attend daily rounds in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU) with medical students, residents, and attending physicians.
